We will review the different locations on your computer where viruses commonly reside. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, however it does examine the most common locations where viruses are hidden. Startup folder – This is a common and logical residence for many viruses. Windows opens every item in the start menu’s start Up folder. This folder is prominent in the programs folder of the start menu. Notice that I did not say that windows “runs” every program that is listed in the startup folder. I mentioned that it “opens” every item.” There is an important distinction. Programs represented in the start up folder will run. You may have shortcuts in the start up folder that represent documents and not executable software. As an example, if a Microsoft power point document is in the start up folder, power point will automatically open that document during system initialization. If you put a “mp3″ file there, your audio software will play the file at initialization, and if you put a “html” file there, your default browser will open the associated web page upon computer start up.
The windows registry. Viruses are quite often added into the registry by malicious programs. The windows operating system executes all instructions in the “Run” section of the registry. Items in the “run” section are programs or files that other executable programs open . Windows will execute all instructions that are present in the “Run Services” section of the registry.
Batch file viruses. Viruses can be inserted into batch files that usually execute upon computer start up or operating system reset. Windows executes all instructions in the windows start batch file, located in the Windows folder. The name of the file is “WINSTART”.BAT”. This file does not exist on all computers, but when it does it is a great hiding place for viruses.
