The Issue Of Polygamy Behind The Mormon Church – LDS Ideas
For any individual that thinks the Mormon religion is small and insignificant they are very surprised to find out that it is fact the sixth largest religion recognized in the majority of the world particularly in the United States. One thing you will most likely find that at some point in time you’re going to run into a Mormon missionary who is going to talk about their beliefs as they are quite zestful in their recruitment. Most often when people think of the Mormons they automatically linked them to polygamy. It should be remembered in fairness to the Mormons about polygamy in the current day of age is not practiced. That is not to say that perhaps years ago that it didn’t exist. Rumor has it that that particular part of the doctrine was changed when government officials were considering taking action.
It should also be mentioned that only 1% of the church in the beginning of the Mormon church actually practiced polygamy and they also considered the spiritual marriages not necessarily what we consider marriage here on earth.
Although many stand in judgment of polygamy and in many countries it is not allowed it should be remembered that in the Islam religion their holy book being the Koran does allow a man to have up to five wives. Now this is only allowable if he is able to treat them all the same and provide equally for each of them. It is said that if one were to go back in the early Jewish doctrine that even then polygamy was encouraged and then for the sole purpose to increase their membership.
So it is often wondered why any time that the subject of polygamy comes up why it is only the Mormons that become the topic of conversation. This is most probably due to the fact that the media has played up the polygamy aspect of the Mormon religion. It must also be remembered that there are many groups that practice polygamy under the misconception off claiming to be Mormons when it is very specific that the Mormon church banned polygamy and it is most definitely not part of their doctrine as of today. In fact any member found practicing polygamy is automatically excommunicated from the Mormon church. So one has to really put the blame here for keeping polygamy and the Mormons in the same category on the media and not the practices of the Mormon religion.
When it comes to marriage it should be remembered also that the Mormons have a little bit of a different look at what marriage really means in the Mormon religion and marriage is considered a sealing that lasts for all eternity. This is in reference to once death occurs and they move on to one of the three heavens the marriage continues.
