Fender Eric Clapton Stratocaster Review – The Most Versatile Guitar Ever?
Fender’s Artist Series of guitars has earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence. Guitarists as wide ranging from Yngwie Malmsteen to John Mayer have their own Artist models. One of the earliest Artist guitars was the Eric Clapton Stratocaster, and it’s still one of their best-selling instruments due to its versatility and playability.
Since most musicians shopping for a Clapton guitar are already informed with the standard Stratocaster features, it’s likely best to concentrate on what makes the Clapton Stratocaster unique.
For starters, there’s the electronics. Throughout his great career, Eric Clapton has used a variety of instruments, including a Gibson Les Paul, a Gibson SG, a Gibson ES-335, and, of course, a Fender Stratocaster. So it goes without saying that Slowhand needs an instrument that can cover a lot of sonic ground.
The Clapton Strat obliges. To begin, it has an active 25db mid-boost (battery powered by 9V), which can take the Strat into pseudo Les Paul territory.
When you add this mid-boost control to the Fender Noiseless pickups and the master TBX control, you’ve got a guitar than is a six-string chameleon, capable of emulating a wide variety of useful, tasteful guitar tones. Honestly, the Clapton Strat might be the most versatile guitar we’ve had the good fortune of playing.
The tones are only part of the picture, though. The playability is top rate as well, owing in no small part to the V-shaped neck with 9.5″ radius. The neck is unbelievably smooth and notes fret and bend with ease. It truly is one of the most comfortable necks we’ve ever seen.
If it seems like we love this guitar, you’d be right. You’ll have to search a long time to find a guitar that has the diversity of sounds coupled with the playability that this guitar has.
That’s not to say we wouldn’t have some suggestions should Mr. Clapton ask our thoughts. While the vintage-style tuners add an air of old-school appeal to the model, we think that locking tuners would be a more appropriate choice for such a modern instrument.
We also wish that the vibrato unit wasn’t blocked. However, that’s Clapton’s preference, so we don’t think it’ll change any time soon.
Aside from these modest suggestions, we think the Eric Clapton model Stratocaster represents the best of Fender’s current offerings. We recommend it without reservation.
