Paradise Found — Camping in the Florida Keys
Bahia Honda State Park has something very unusual for the Florida Keys. It has a beach. And a really nice one too. Add to it great camping sites and you have the recipe for a Florida Keys camping wonderland. Let’s find out why.
Although the Florida Keys are islands, naturally made beaches are very exceptional indeed. Why? Largely since the waters surrounding the Keys are so calm, the beach does not get a chance to build up. Bahia Honda has, no doubt about it, the most beautiful beach in the Keys, and possibly the loveliest in Florida.
Swimming is a popular activity at Bahia Honda State Park. The calm turquoise waters are warm, being in the upper 70s to the low eighties a good amount of the year. In addition, the waters are very clear. Although the beach looks out to the Atlantic Ocean, unless there’s a storm out in the ocean, the waters are calm.
Together with swimming, snorkeling is a large draw to Bahia Honda State Park. The calm, clear turquoise waters which invite swimming are excellent for exploring the underwater kingdom. And if you’d like to have a treat, book a snorkeling tour from Bahia Honda out to Looe Key to visit the coral reef.
Kayaking, canoeing and boating are also on the list of enjoyable things at the park. There is a small marina and a boat ramp. If you’ve somehow misplaced your boat, you are able to rent a kayak from the park’s concession stand. The calm waters are fantastic for exploring the nooks and crannies of the key, particularly on the Gulf side.
Don’t forget Florida Keys camping. From tents to RVs to renting one of their beach cabins, many types of camping are available. Here’s a warning: call ahead to reserve a camping site or particularly one of the cabins. As you could imagine, a beach cottage in paradise has a bit of a waiting list.
Bahia Honda State Park is located in the lower Florida Keys, just south and west of Seven Mile Bridge. Just one stay and you will realize why they call the Florida Keys the American Caribbean. Or simply Paradise.
So come on and visit. The weather is beautiful and the natives are welcoming. And once you’re here, you will have to agree that it’s paradise found at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys.
